The Department of Microbiology was established under Dr. B. R. Ambedkar University, Agra, Apart from being
one of the most prestigious departments that runs B.Sc. (Industrial Microbiology) (since 1997), and M.Sc. (Microbiology) (since 2008) programmes,
it also offers courses in basic Microbiology to undergraduate & postgraduate students.
The Department well equipped laboratory with modern instruments. The department is enriched with learning resources such as
charts, slides, models, herbarium which help the students in independent learning.
Industrial Microbiology is a branch of science that applies microbial sciences to create industrial products in mass quantities,
often using microorganisms. Microorganisms play a big role in the industry, with multiple ways to be used. Medicinally,
microbes can be used for creating antibiotics in order to treat antibiotics. Microbes can also be used for the food
industry as well. The chemical industry also uses microorganisms in order to synthesis amino acids and organic solvents.
Microbes can also be used in an agricultural application for use as a biopesticide instead of using dangerous chemicals
and or inoculants to help plant proliferation.
The faculty members are specialized in various fields like Recombinant DNA Technology, Molecular Biology, Immunology,
Medical Microbiology, Bioinformatics, Environmental Microbiology, Virology, Agricultural Microbiology, Food and Dairy
Microbiology, Industrial Microbiology, Bioprocess Engineering, Biomolecule Production, and Basic Research.
The skill enhancement courses that are a part of the programme are designed to build a strong microbiology
knowledge base in the students, and furthermore, acquaints the students with the applied aspects of this
fascinating discipline, thus preparing the student for an eventual job in academia or industry. All the
faculty members have several years of teaching and research experience. Besides the conventional blackboard
teaching, power-point presentations, videos, interactive sessions, seminars, problem solving and revision
classes are routinely used, with the goal of enhancing the competence of students and supporting them to
make a mark in future.
