The mission of the Department of Sociology is to provide students with the theoretical and substantive knowledge to participate as skilled professionals with the institutions and organizations that shape our diversity and global society.

Objectives

The course, with interdisciplinary inclinations starts by providing a strong foundation to students through the introduction of the dominant sociological theories in the first year. This is followed by understanding and application of classical and contemporary theories keeping the Indian context in mind in the second year. The final year will address more practical oriented papers that would benefit students through its multi-disciplinary orientation: Research Methodology, Sociology of Women, Sociology of Urban Communities and Contemporary Social Issues.
Emphasis on internship in the second year is to consolidate the knowledge students have acquired with the intention that they apply it in an empirical study of institutions that provide social service.
